What is the MACRAO Transfer Agreement?
The MACRAO Transfer Agreement is designed to facilitate transfer from community colleges to baccalaureate
colleges and universities. It provides for transferability of up to 30 semester credits to meet many
(and in some cases all) of the General Education Requirements at participating Michigan four-year
colleges and universities. Students may complete the MACRAO Transfer Agreement as part of an
associate degree or as a stand-alone package.
Once the specified set of courses is completed, the courses will transfer and be applied toward meeting
the general education requirements at the 4-year college or university.
- While many Michigan colleges and universities honor the MACRAO Transfer Agreement, some participate in a more limited manner. Students should check with the receiving institution regarding their transfer policies.
The MACRAO Transfer Agreement Requirements
A minimum of 30 semester hours of coursework must be taken at one of Michigan’s participating
community colleges. The courses needed to satisfy the MACRAO requirements are as follows:
- English Composition. . . . . 6 credit hours
- Science and Math. . . . . 8 credit hours Courses must be taken from a minimum of two subject areas. At least one science course must include a laboratory.
- Social Science. . . . . 8 credit hours Courses must be taken from a minimum of two subject areas.
- Humanities. . . . . 8 credit hours Courses must be taken from a minimum of two subject areas.
MACRAO Transcript Posting
When coursework requirements for meeting the MACRAO Transfer Agreement have been completed,
the student may request that their transcript be posted "MACRAO Transfer Agreement Satisfied."
- Some community colleges require the student to initiate a formal request to have his/her transcript MACRAO posted. Students should check with the Registrar’s Office at their community college regarding the procedure to be followed.
Provisions, Limitations, & Exceptions
Not all Michigan colleges and universities participate in the MACRAO Transfer Agreement; some
participate fully and others participate with various limitations and/or provisions (provisos).
The agreement applies only to those colleges and universities which participate in the agreement.
To learn about an institution’s level of participation, students should contact their community
college counselor/advisor and an admissions representative from the institution(s) where they are
considering attendance. A complete list of participating institutions and provisos can be found below.
Important Steps for Students
Prior to enrolling in courses, it is HIGHLY recommended that students:
- Contact their community college for the institutional policy regarding the granting of credit toward the MACRAO Agreement.
- Check with their community college counselor/advisor AND an admissions representative from the four-year college to select courses to fulfill the MACRAO Agreement and to discuss provisos which need to be considered.

Public Four-Year Colleges Ferris State University (last updated 1/31/2008)ACADEMIC AFFAIRS POLICY LETTER
GENERAL EDUCATION TRANSFER POLICY
Effective September 6, 2005
Transfer of degrees to FSU in relation to BS/BA/BAS/BIS/BSW
General Education Requirements
Objective: To clarify the process of transferring general education credits to Ferris for students with completed degrees and/or with the Michigan Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (MACRAO) stamp. The MACRAO agreement applies only to students entering bachelor degree programs, pertains solely to general education, and does not exempt students from meeting specific requirements for their program major.
MACRAO stamp only: Students transferring to Ferris State University with a MACRAO STAMP will have met the lower division general education requirements, meaning that in order to complete the general education requirements for a bachelor’s degree at FSU they must still complete the upper-level communication competence requirement and have a minimum of 33 hours in general education coursework.
AA and AS degrees and MACRAO stamp: Students transferring to Ferris State University with a completed associate degree in arts or associate degree in science will have met the lower division general education requirements. In addition, they must complete the upper-level communication competence requirement and have a minimum of 33 hours in general education coursework.
AAS and AAA degrees: Students transferring to Ferris State University with a completed associate in applied arts or associate in applied science (unless accompanied by a MACRAO stamp) must complete the general education requirements for the bachelor’s degree.
BS and BA degrees: Students transferring to Ferris State University with a completed bachelor’s degree are assumed to have completed ALL general education requirements.
Transfer of Grades Lower than C: Students transferring completed degrees, associate or bachelors, or MACRAO stamp only to Ferris State University will not have to repeat courses with grades lower than “C” (2.0) in order to meet General Education requirements. Programmatic requirements and prerequisites override the acceptance of grades lower than “C.” The Transfer of grades less than a “C” (2.0) Rule* still applies for individual courses transferred outside of degrees and the MACRAO stamp.
*Ferris accepts transfer courses in which the student earned a grade of "C" (2.0) or better. Consistent with program progression policies, coursework taken at other institutions and not accepted for credit at FSU may need to be repeated. All references to a 2.0 GPA are on a 4.0 scale.
Individual college requirements or programmatic requirements supersede these general education transfer guidelines.
